What to Pack for a London Summer Vacation

Last summer I wrote a post called What to Wear for a London Summer Vacation after a reader e-mailed me questions about what to pack for a trip she was planning. One year later, the post is still getting a great response, so I thought I would update on a few things just in time for those of you who are travelling to London for the Olympics!

As per usual, the weather in London is the big issue to consider when you're packing for a Great British getaway and this summer, it's more up & down than usual. You can expect all four seasons in one day, so it's important to be prepared!

Non-committal Layers are key for comfort when traipsing around London. I recommend scarves to keep you cute and warm, but that can be easily removed when it gets warmer or while travelling on the hot, crowded tube trains. I'm currently loving these scarves by Stella McCartneyDVF and Alexander McQueen. If you don't have a scarf you love, why not treat yourself to one as a souvineer! Visit Selfridges on Oxford Street or head to either Harvey Nichols or Harrods in Knightsbridge to pick one up by your favourite British designer!

Sunnies are essential when the sun peeks out between the fits of rain! I also sometimes wear my sunglasses inside tube stations when the lights are too harsh. Right now I'm totally in love with Tiffany & Co. sunglasses, particularly the Tortoiseshell and Cat Eye styles!

Get used to calling your umbrella a Brollie and definitely get used to having it on your person at all times - you don't want to be caught out without one! Since London will definitely be crowded during the Olympics, a bright coloured one can be handy for being able to find each other when you get separated by crowds. I'm currently loving these adorable umbrellas by Missoni!

Your best bet for transportation in London is to invest in an Oyster Card - it's like a subway pass. I personally like to keep my Oyster card in a card holder along with a bit of cash and a few other cards I use regularly. It's convenient, fits in my coat pocket and you don't have to remove the Oyster when you swipe in and out of tube or train stations - Organization will be your friend while travelling to and from the games this summer! I'm currently loving these card holders by Etro, Gucci, Paul Smith and Alexander McQueen.

Hydration is vital - even when it's raining with a cool breeze, it gets muggy and the tube is very hot. Carrying a bottle of water with you while travelling is advisable in case of delays. I've also found that the Evian Mineral Water Spray is completely amazing! When you feel too hot, a bit motion sick or smothered, it's a cool, refreshing treat that fits in your purse!

With the right essentials in your bag, you'll be all set to enjoy your trip to London, whether for the Olympics or just a bit of fun in Blighty!

What are some of your favourite travel essentials?
