Style Profile: Kat H. Clayton & Thoughts on Her Novel, The Kings of Charleston

It took me about 48 hours to read The Kings of Charleston... I simply couldn't sleep until I finished it. It's the first novel of budding mystery author Kat H. Clayton and also the first in a series. The 2nd book is expected early next year.

Just before her senior year of high school, the lead character Casper, a petulant anti-social girl who spends more time with her horses than she does with anyone else, finds out she will be moving to Charleston with her parents and she has no choice.  As soon as the family arrives in their new home, weird things start happening, sometimes dangerous things. I don't want to give away too much so I'll leave it at that, but what I will say is that if you enjoy a good mystery series with tons of suspense and a bit of romance, The Kings of Charleston will be right up your alley! I myself can't wait to read the second book!

Luckily, when I approached Kat about sharing some of her favorites with me, she was all for it! Let me tell you, she's not only a talented writer, but a true Southern girl with fabulous taste who knows where to go in the South for a good time, a great meal or the best shopping! She was so gracious that when I sent her the same question twice without realizing it, she actually answered it twice - what a peach! Prepare yourself for a major girl crush - who doesn't love a Southern belle who's style icons are Kate Middleton & Kate Beckinsale and picks Gone With the Wind as the best book of all time?

  1. Biggest Influence - Mary Higgins Clark is the author that influences Kat the most - she's read all of her books!
  2. Kat's Favorite Place for a Vacay - Savannah, Georgia where she loves to dine at Cobblestone Conch House, 700 Drayton and Corleone's. While enjoying her time away, Kat rests her head at The Mansion on Forsyth Park or The Marshall House in between visits to the Jepson Center for the Arts, shopping at The City Market or The Paris Market and a spontaneous walks through historic downtown Savannah.

  8. Creature Comforts - Kat's stays cosy at home with Frasier Fir scented candles by Thymes, Lenox Botanical Boutique Vases and little knick-knacks from around the world she collects whether from her own travels or given to her as gifts from family!
  9. What's on TV? - Golden Girls, NCIS, Hart of Dixie and her favorite new obsession - Revenge!
  10. Recommended Reads - I could't help asking Kat's advice on what to read - she suggests anything by Mary Higgins Clark, The Help by Kathryn Stockett and The Luxe Series by Anna Godbersen.
  11. Favorite Charleston Hotspots - While in Charleston, the setting of her first novel, Kat loves dining at the Thoroughbred Club at Charleston Place and shopping anywhere on King Street, but her favorite is Luna

Playlist

Many writers are inspired by music while penning their masterpieces and since I had the opportunity, I thought I'd ask Kat what she listened to while writing The Kings of Charleston. She was more than happy to share the songs that individually inspired the chapters of her novel saying that she would listen to one song over and over until that chapter was finished. Enjoy The Kings of Charleston playlist!
