Kensington Cocktails

I love a good cocktail, though I'll be the first to admit that I could use a little training when it comes to making one. So when I got the invitation to attend a cocktail master class at the beautiful Kensington Hotel, I jumped at the chance! The skilled mixologists taught us tips & tricks for building the perfect cocktail while we nibbled on canap├ęs, sipped champagne and enjoyed Gin & Tonic Ice Cream. Yum!

Building a good cocktail is an art form that requires a little bit of skill, a balance of tastes and some confidence to boot. We learned how to make three cocktails before competing in a Master Chef style three round event. I didn't win, but I had fun trying and tasting the fruits of my labor. The master class finished with each participant creating his or her own signature cocktail. Scroll to the bottom to see the recipe for my creation, appropriately named The Southern Belle.

The Southern Belle

Ingredients

1 part lemon juice
1 part simple syrup
2 parts Southern Comfort
3 parts sparkling water
Lemon & lime slices to garnish

Method
Fill a small glass with ice and set aside. Combine lemon juice, simple syrup and Southern Comfort with ice in a cocktail shaker and give it a good shake. Strain any water out of the glass with ice in it and double strain the alcohol mixture into the glass over ice. Top up with sparkling water and garnish with one slice each of lemon & lime.

Many thanks to the Kensington Hotel for this fabulous experience! I definitely recommend stopping by for a cocktail in the Aubrey Bar if you find yourself in the area.

  1. I love the sound of your cocktail - but I'm "afeared" to drink it as I've had such bad college memories associated with SoCo that even the smell of it makes me nervous! haha! Maybe I'll get a rec from a bartender friend about a good SoCo substitute.

The event sounds amazing. Do they offer that opportunity with any regularity?

    1. I don't think so - this was part of London Cocktails Week. Maybe try substituting gin for SoCo and see how that works? xx
