Carry-on Confidential - What's in My Bag

With luggage restrictions and the cost of checking bags these days, it's nice to be able to hop on a flight with just a carry-on and leave your worries behind. It's more difficult than it sounds, but mastering the carry-on only packing list is the ultimate freedom! These are my must-haves when I travel, started with my liquids allowance.

Everything that's not on this list and in the photo below that I pack for my holidays is in dry or powder form. You can pack as many of those as you choose so I've not put my favorites here, but I generally take an eyeshadow palette, a blush, a bronzer, a highlighting powder and a couple of lip pencils. Easy peasy. I also throw in a small volumizing hair powder that will work either as a dry shampoo substitute on the roots or as a volume booster for limp, day-old hair.

  1. Benefit Dandelion Lipgloss (℅ Benefit) - Serves as a great lip moisturizer while in flight and a lip gloss worthy of day or night while away. I also love to layer this lip gloss over a lip pencil or lipstick for getting multiple looks with minimal packing.
  2. ageLOC Radiant Day (℅ Nu Skin) - A moisturizer with SPF 22 for sun protection that's light enough to wear under make-up, but helps skin look radiant when worn alone. When I'm traveling, I don't mind using this cream day and night to save on packing and it's the perfect size at 25ml.
  3. ReNu Multi-Purpose Solution Flight Pack - I love this little convenience! I wear contacts, so saline solution is imperative no matter where I go. These bottles are 100ml, perfect for carry-ons. I also love that the flight pack comes with a new, clean contacts case and a regulation sized plastic bag. Sorted!
  4. Volume Shampoo & Conditioner Suitcase Essentials (℅ Trevor Sorbie) - Trevor Sorbie products are affordable, yet never disappoint me. I love these travel sizes because they're big enough to last a few days, yet still under the regulated limit.
  5. NARS Tinted Moisturizer - I use this product daily and never use foundation at all, but what's great is that it's the right size for a carry-on, has SPF and can be worn in thin or thick layers depending on the amount of coverage required for versatility.
  6. Max Factor Clump Defy False Lash Effect Mascara - Despite this mascara's name, it actually goes on quite light, which is great for day. When I want a more dramatic look for evening, I just layer it on thick… The perfect travel mascara!

Reading Material
Of course I usually travel with any combination of my laptop, iPhone and iPad, but I do like to unplug (I know, gasp!) now and then… This is what I packed to read on my most recent flight and though I didn't finish them, you never know when you'll be delayed and wish you had more to read, so I always bring extras.

  1. Garden & Gun Magazine - My favorite for catching up on all things Southern. Not living in the US? No problem - they offer an international subscription and it's worth it!
  2. Delicious Magazine - My favorite food magazine for recipes, foodie news and general kitchen inspiration….
  3. All You Need to be Impossibly French by Helena Frith Powell - I read another book by this author called Two Lipsticks and a Lover a while ago and I really enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to reading this one!
  4. At Home With Madame Chic by Jennifer L. Scott - I recently finished Scott's first book, Lessons From Madame Chic and I am anxiously anticipating the sequel.
When it's cold, I'll pack a number of scarves, but typically I choose a small selection of jewelry I can wear with everything I've packed and keep it simple. Historically I've been an over-packer, but no amount of the jewelry I packed into my case would be worn… These are my current faves that I took on my recent holiday in Ireland.

  1. Tory Burch Dome Stud Earrings - I've had these earrings for years and most of the time I pretty much wear them daily. They're perfect for travel because they go with everything - nice & simple.
  2. Timex Originals Linen Small Watch (℅ Timex) - I'm not a daily watch wearer most of the time, but I find a watch absolutely essential while traveling. You never know when you're phone will die after one too many Instagrams and I like to know what time it is. I love this linen strapped, classic gold, timeless watch by Timex! It's cute for day, but nice enough for night and it has a summery vibe to it that I'm loving right now. Also, it's only linen on the outside… The strap is lined with genuine leather, which makes it rather comfy to wear day in, day out.

Aside from clothing, shoes, hair brushes, electronics and chargers, that's about it… What do you put in your carry-on when you're not checking a bag?
