Learning to Play Tennis With Maui Jim & Wimbledon Hopeful Martina Hingis

It's not every day you get the opportunity to learn some tennis tips from a 9-time Grand Slam champion, so even though I'm not at all a tennis player, when Maui Jim invited me along to play with All England Coach Dan Bloxham and tennis superstar Martina Hingis, I just couldn't resist! For anyone not familiar with Martina Hingis, she won Wimbledon at the ripe old age of 16 several years ago and she's competing this year in doubles. As I'm writing this, she's playing a quarter finals match and I'm hopeful that she'll make it through.

Starting the day with tea & Pimm's at The Wimbledon Club, we were also treated to a pair of sunglasses which came in handy on the day. I chose the Kawika style which is similar to a Clubmaster style and I absolutely love them! With tortoiseshell frames and bronze mirror lenses, I'm going to be getting a lot of wear out of these gorgeous sunnies this summer and they were perfect for an afternoon of tennis.

Meeting Martina Hingis was an inspiring to say the least. Though I'm not a tennis player, I admire her drive, strength and dedication to the sport. At one point during the session, coach Dan Bloxham said, "The better the tennis player, the more humble they are and the harder they work."After spending a little time in the presence of Martina Hingis, I can believe that's true.

Though I've tried to play tennis in the past, the problem I've always had is my swing… I've historically been a home run hitter. Just watching and listening to Hingis and Bloxham for about an hour helped me to understand much more how to handle my racket and properly hit the ball in the direction I'd like it to go. I'm now actually considering taking up tennis for fun during the summer with a few friends… I know I won't be a champ and my ball control still has a long way to go, but a bit of exercise and fun is always on order when the sun is shining.

All in all, it was a great day out at The Wimbledon Club with Maui Jim. Over the course of the 3 hour session, I improved greatly and no longer feel like tennis is completely beyond me. Polynesian dancers finished off the day and it was a great experience. I loved playing in my Kawika sunnies as well. I can see so clearly in them, there's no glare from the sun and they don't slip and slide like so many glasses - they're stylish and yet perfect for sports or an active lifestyle. I can't wait to take them on my next big adventure!
