Netflix Picks - 8 Movies That Prove the 80's Are Still Cool

When most of these films came out, I was a baby or not much more than a toddler, however times were different then (Gosh I sound old!) so I ended up kind of growing up with some of these movies... We didn't have Netflix and I didn't start using the internet until I was about 16, so good old fashioned VHS tapes occupied a lot of my time and I watched what we owned or what was available in our local tiny movie rental shop. The funny thing is... I rarely felt like there was nothing to watch and I was constantly entertained! These 8 movies from the 80's are currently available on Netflix and they're still great fun to watch!

1. Desperately Seeking Susan

Confession: I didn't actually grow up with this first film Desperately Seeking Susan. In fact, I watched it for the first time on Netflix about 3 weeks ago. Though I always loved Madonna's style from this movie (and even dressed up like her for Halloween about 2 or 3 years ago), no one in my house liked this film in the 80's or 90's so I never gave it a shot. I popped it on recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's cute, funny and very reminiscent of the 80's. I think I'll be watching it again and again!

2. Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Unlike the first movie above, I did grow up with Ferris Bueller and this film has a very special place in my heart because it's the first movie I ever saw in a cinema. Funny, whimsical and fun, this little gem is about a guy in high school who, well... Takes a day off! It does what it says on the cover and so much more - if you've never seen it, cancel everything and watch it immediately!

3. La Bamba

I have always loved this film about the young latino musician who took America by storm with his music in the 1950's before dying tragically at the age of 17. Full of great music, vintage costumes and great performances particularly from star Lou Diamond Phillips, La Bamba is a rock-n-roll biopic must-see!

4. Fast Times at Ridgemont High

I'm almost certain I've featured Fast Times at Ridgemont High here on the blog before, but it's well worth mentioning again. If you love Clueless, you'll also love this high school comedy by the same director. Featuring big movie stars in their youth like Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Nicolas Cage to name a few, this is one to watch time and again.

 5. Hannah and Her Sisters

Hannah and Her Sisters is another 80's film I saw for the first time recently. I love Woody Allen and I occasionally enjoy a bit of a marathon of his films... This film is all about love triangles and features the standard Woody Allen wit and humor. You'll recognize a few faces in this one like Michael Caine, Mia Farrow and Diane Wiest.

6. Mommie Dearest

Based on a best-selling memoir, Mommie Dearest cronicles the adoption of a young girl by Hollywood moviestar Joan Crawford. From the outside, it looks like a perfect life, but Christina Crawford's childhood was anything but ideal. This 1981 film will completely change the way you feel about face masks and wire hangers if you've not yet seen it before.

 7. Pretty in Pink

I grew up with Pretty in Pink among other Molly Ringwald films and to be honest, I never liked it until recently. The conclusion I came to was that I was too young the first few times I saw it to really appreciate it. Now I love it and I watch it over and over. Reverse snobbery is the major theme here, but I will be honest and say that I still don't understand all the fuss about Ducky...

8. St. Elmo's Fire

If I had a dollar for every time I've seen this St. Elmo's Fire, I would hire someone else to type this right now so I could sit down and watch it again. Following the lives of some rather privileged young adults after graduating from Georgetown College as they struggle with the challenges of adulthood, this is a coming of age film that I think resonates with a lot of people. Money, marriage, the job market, adultery, drugs, finding love... They go through it all. Also, Rob Lowe is totally hot in this movie!
