Up for Love French Film

It's been a while since I've seen a rom com at the cinema... They seem to be rather few and far between these days with screens constantly full of epic fantasy films and blockbuster remakes of tired, old superhero stories. I don't know about you, but this makes me sad since a good rom com is usually at the top of my list for something fun to watch! Normally, I'm not drawn to foreign films, but I couldn't resist checking out Up for Love, a new French-language romantic comedy from Soda Pictures arriving in cinemas on August 5, 2016.

With Tinder being a regular topic of conversation these days, Up For Love is a timely story of meeting a man for the first time, only to find out that he isn't quite what was expected. When Diane, a divorced lawyer played by Virginie Efira (Elle, The Sense of Wonder) leaves her phone on the table at a cafe after an argument with her ex-husband and business partner, she gets a phone call from Alexandre, played by Academy Award Winner Jean Dujardin, (The Artist, The Wolf of Wall Street). He's coy, charming and funny, so she agrees to meet him to retrieve the phone. When Alexandre arrives, Diane is disappointed to find out that the mystery man who'd sounded so tall, dark and handsome on the phone is in reality, under 5 feet tall. I can't tell you how many friends of mine have come back from dates either arranged by a friend or on a dating app like Tinder with a similar story... It's all, Oh, I met this guy and he was absolutely amazing on the phone, but then I met him for a drink and he's so short! Luckily for Diane, Alexandre is not your average man - he has a few tricks up his sleeve to make up for his shortcomings. He's not only amusing, but he's also adventurous, talented, loving, wealthy, clever and challenges her to enjoy things she never thought she could. Before she knows it, Diane is in deep and faced with the challenges of being in a relationship with someone who makes her happy and yet doesn't measure up to society's standards.

A classic love story, Up For Love has everything you want from a rom-com including an interesting cast of characters, a fight scene, adventure, a funny best friend-type character and even an epic dance scene. It's funny, sweet and a real feel-good movie. It's refreshing to see a more sensitive, vulnerable male character in a romantic plot line as it's usually the other way around and Jean Dujardin is so charming that it would be hard not to fall in love with him. The leading lady gives a wonderful performance as well, not to mention that she is an absolute beauty and immaculately dressed throughout the film in swoon-worthy dresses, crisp chic suits and heels that will make you want to go shoe shopping as soon as credits roll.

With a great cast, good performances and a fun soundtrack, Up For Love is truly unexpected, funny, romantic and will tug on your heartstrings a little. Lovely to enjoy on your own, with a date or for a girls night out, this is definitely one to catch at the cinema this summer!
