I bought a September issue magazine when I was a teen or maybe even a tween with my own money and for months afterwards, I poured over the pages, trying my hardest to imitate as much as I could in a small town with little in the way of shopping opportunities and even less money in my pockets. One of the things I remember falling in love with was a deep,
dark purple lipstick by Revlon. I saved my allowance and bought it at the local Walmart as soon as I could. I later followed up with the matching eyeshadow palette and nail polish. I remember the shock I caused at school when I actually wore it. Some people called me a freak while others complimented me on my bravery, but I loved it so I didn't much care what other people thought. I was fearless at that age and I wasn't trying to shock anyone. I was embracing my love of fashion and beauty, imitating what I had seen on the models and trying something new. I wore that first lipstick I ever purchased with my own money until it ran out, sometimes embracing its boldness while other times changing it up with a lighter gloss or lipstick over it. I was sad to find that by the time it was gone, the color had been discontinued. It was, for me, the end of an era...
But, as the song says
"Everything old is new again" and such is the case with purple lipstick. I nearly squealed with delight when I happened upon
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Va Va Violet. I even thought when I saw it in the store that it might be a revival of my beloved purple lippy from the 90's. Alas, it's not the same one, but it's pretty darn close and when I saw it, I felt I owed it to my inner fashion & beauty-obsessed teenager to buy it. As it turns out, some things never change and while it made some of my friends wince when I wore it, I still love this broody, dark color. It's so fun to wear and it's so in line with Autumn lip trends!
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Va Va Violet is a deep shade of purple, but it has some magenta in it that catches in the light, making it a little less drastic than the more severe purple of my youth... It's a little prettier too. I think this gorgeous, creamy lipstick is the perfect wine color for a vampy Autumn lip.
Just because
Va Va Violet is quite dark doesn't mean that it's not versatile. I love to pair this with a berry colored lip liner for a more subtle, feminine look, but for Halloween I lined my lips with a dark purple eyeliner before applying the lipstick for a deeper, more dramatic pout. To lighten this up a bit, I might add a glossy, light pink lip gloss over top or to stay true to the color I would just wear it alone. I've worn this lipstick with pretty pink eye makeup, a minimal eye makeup look or with a smokey eye. The sky is the limit and you can be as bold with a lipstick like this as you like... Figuring out how you like to wear it best is part of the fun!
And so, with a quick trip to my local pharmacy, I have relived a little piece of my teenage years... Funny how things cycle back around.
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Va Va Violet is £7.99 and available online from
ASOS or
Ulta.
What makeup products from your teenage years would you wear again if given the chance? Any adolescent beauty trends you'd love to bring back?
