A Hilltop Oasis and a Room With a View at the Maritim Hotel Galatzo in Mallorca

Relaxing vacations aren't really my thing, but after two years of hard work and no real holiday for various reasons I won't bore you with, I knew I really needed one. Typically my husband and I would book a week or two in a major European city and really enjoy it. Trying out restaurants, shopping till we drop, enjoying museums and our favourite pastime, sitting in coffee shops while people watching with a hot cuppa are generally what we enjoy when we take a trip. About 6 months, I found myself for the first time constantly uttering the phrase "I desperately need a holiday" and wishing for sun, something I normally don't really pay much mind to and it was then that I realized it wasn't a trip we needed, but a break. It was a shock since I'd come to really hate sun holidays after living in the Caribbean for almost three years where there was literally nothing to do but sit in the sun every single day. Relax had become a word I hated, but 7 years of fast-paced, hustle & bustle city life later and a week of chilling in the sunshine sounded ideal... A week at the Maritim Hotel Galatzo in Mallorca was actually the perfect place for just that... It was exactly what we needed.

Rear View of the Main Building
Nestled high up on a hill, the Maritim Hotel Galatzo is a visually stunning property, especially when you see it peeking out behind palm trees from the road below. It reminded me of the huge white houses sitting on the Hollywood hills in LA. The closer you get to it, the better it gets and you realize why it's so far up on the hill... The views are absolutely incredible. I've stayed in some stunning places before but with two beautiful pools, views of mountains, villages below and the sea in addition to the most breathtaking sunsets I've ever seen, I can honestly say that the Maritim Hotel Galatzo is one of the most visually beautiful places I've ever hung my hat for a week. Every day it seemed to get even more beautiful than the day before. It doesn't offer incredibly lush interiors and you won't feel like you're staying in super high luxury, but one step onto the balcony and your stress seems to melt away... It's impossible to feel anything but extreme joy when you're surrounded by such incredible natural beauty.

Knowing where to stay in Mallorca if you've never been before can be tricky. If you're planning a trip or think you might in the future, be sure to read 10 Things to Know About Visiting Mallorca before you make any bookings. Some places are wild and crazy while others have a more relaxed vibe. Some places are family-friendly and others are more suitable to stag & hen parties. The Maritim Hotel Galatzo is fairly separated from most of these vibes, holding its own identity in solitude, which is both rewarding and a challenge, depending on what you want out of your stay. During our time there, the average age was probably about 50 years old, so it's not really the kind of place you want to go if drinking on the balcony and partying all night long are part of your plan. That said, if you're looking for a quiet place to rest your head, a relaxing oasis to get away from it all, a romantic getaway or a family-friendly retreat from everyday life, you can't go wrong staying at the Maritim Hotel Galatzo.

Evening by the Pool
Maritim Hotel Galatzo has a convention centre on the premises, so business travellers are likely. Additionally there's a tennis complex on the property, a golf course very nearby and cycling trails right outside, so it's perfect for sports tourists. The spa and swimming pools (2 outdoor and 1 indoor) are a draw for those who are planning to relax. Keeping all these things in mind, this stunning hotel is a bit of a sleepy one - the kind of place where the bar closes at 10pm for the first half of the week and people who stay there are likely to be early risers. It's so sleepy that I was reprimanded by an elderly neighbour for talking in pretty much a whisper on our balcony. If quiet is what you're after, this is the place for you - mostly you won't hear a peep other than birds singing in the morning. If you're someone who wants something a little more lively, this spot might seem a bit like a retirement home. For us, a relaxing week at the Maritim Hotel Galatzo was just what we never knew we needed. I came home so relaxed I could hardly recognise myself. If your idea of a holiday is fun, exciting, meeting lots of new people and loud music by the swimming pool, you'll probably want to stay somewhere else, but if chill is the vibe you seek, this is a great option.

Our room was absolutely lovely. I particularly loved that there were two large wardrobes with plenty of hangers. I hate staying in a place that doesn't offer enough storage for unpacking. There wasn't a tub in the bathroom, but it was spacious and had everything we needed. My one complaint about the room was that the shower was too slippery - I actually fell on our first day there, but once I got used to it, it was fine. The bed was huge and quite comfortable, a hairdryer was provided and the real treat in the room was the balcony with a sea view. Additionally our room had robes for both of us, plenty of lighting, more than enough electrical outlets including two on each side of the bed which makes charging phones a lot easier, a television that we didn't turn on to be honest and separate towels for the pool & spa which could be exchanged at the spa anytime throughout the stay. All guests have access to the spa facilities which we enjoyed a few times, including an indoor pool, two saunas, a steam room and a jacuzzi. I really enjoyed the spa however the jacuzzi wasn't hot enough and the steam room was a little cold, but the sauna and indoor swimming pool were lovely and a real treat since it wasn't quite warm enough to swim outside. When the weather is warm enough, there's a terrace at the main building with plenty of outdoor seating and both outdoor pools have sun loungers. The lower pool also has outdoor couches, Balinese beds and more sun loungers. Furthermore, there are places all over the property to catch some rays with outdoor lounges scattered about and more sun chairs than you can imagine.

Cocktail in the sun
Cocktail of the Day
We booked our trip through Secret Escapes so we got a great deal. Our package came with a welcome drink upon arrival, a free cocktail of the day for each person every day we were there, breakfast daily and discounts for the restaurant and spa. This is the second time I've booked through Secret Escapes and it's always a pleasure. The first time was a trip in England so we didn't require travel, but this time we even booked our flights into the package and to be honest, it couldn't have been an easier experience. If you aren't familiar with Secret Escapes, it's an online travel company that provides discounted deals for luxury travel. Click here to watch a video on how it works.

The hotel also offers a gym on the premises that guests can use and there's a playground area for children outside. For families and those who prefer a bit more space or comfort, there are a fair few room options to choose from depending on what you require and how much you want to spend including family suites, apartsuites that have a kitchenette and the Galatzo Suites. There's an accomodation level suitable for every type of traveller.

Poolside dining at sunset
Casa De Rey Poolside Seating During a Sunset
The Maritim Hotel Galatzo offers a variety of food & drink options on the property. There's a pool bar, which wasn't really open during our stay. There's also a lobby bar that's open all day serving drinks inside or on the terrace that overlooks one of the outdoor pools, serves everything from coffee & juices to cocktails & whisky and features live music every evening. A spacious restaurant area upstairs with a view of the sea serves a buffet breakfast that is out of this world offering everything you could ever want for your first meal of the day. In the evening, the same space serves a buffet dinner for a few hours for €22 per person. Finally, the Vista De Rey Restaurant which is located near the lower outdoor pool with poolside seating offers a more gourmet option for dinner, serving a lovely steak and gratin which we enjoyed on our first night while watching an incredible sunset. If you don't want to sit outside, you can enjoy the same menu inside the Piano Bar. During the day until 5pm, Vista De Rey has a snack menu that offers things like croquette and mozzarella stick platters, lasagna, french fries and more. We had lunch there in the sun a few times and found the snack menu food to be among the best we had while visiting Mallorca. While there are not always options for food at every hour of the day, there are enough offerings throughout the day for you to never leave the property if you don't want to as long as you plan accordingly.

Mini Bar
The Minibar Snacks
In the event that you don't plan your day just right, which is easily doable when you're in relaxation mode, every room features a minibar with plenty of cold drink options in the refrigerator and a few snacks like Pringles, nuts and Haribo on the desk, so you won't starve to death or die of thirst. Each room also has a Nespresso machine, teabags, a selection of Nespresso pods and a kettle, but it's important to note that the coffee pods and teabags are not free. They aren't expensive and definitely cheaper than the coffees & teas downstairs, but to avoid any surprises on your bill, keep that in mind. You can of course buy a box of Nespresso pods, teabags or a jar of instant coffee at any local grocery store and a pint of milk to keep in the fridge and it's a lot cheaper. Another thing to keep in mind is that while every room has a small fridge, they are very fully stocked, so you can only fit a couple of things in there.

Mallorca at Dusk
Evening View From the Main Building Terrace
Overall, our stay at the Maritim Hotel Galatzo was an extremely comfortable and pleasant one. It's an absolutely beautiful place offering everything you need for an incredible week away. With a walking trail just outside that leads to the nearby town of Paguera (about a 10 minute walk downhill - 20 minutes uphill) or a call from the front desk that will have a taxi outside in 5 minutes, it's easy enough to get around and find things to do away from the property. A taxi to Paguera will only set you back about €5. The hotel also offers bike rentals and car hires if that's what you want to do and a free shuttle that goes to Paguera at scheduled times throughout the morning and afternoon. The hotel is located about a 20 minute drive from Palma Airport (the taxi fare is about €50 however there are busses you can take if you don't have too much luggage and are traveling on a budget). Many of the staff are fluent in multiple languages including English, Spanish and German, though we did meet some staff who speak additional languages like French, Dutch and Catalan. They are easily identifiable by the flags on their name tags and everyone we encountered on the hotel staff was very nice. I would definitely recommend the Maritim Hotel Galatzo for a relaxing holiday in Mallorca. It's secluded enough for a quiet getaway, but central enough for a bit of fun exploring and with it's open design and natural scenery, easily one of the most beautiful hotels I've ever stayed in.
