Where to Stay in Stratford-Upon-Avon - The Pen & Parchment Pub & Hotel

Pen & Parchment

I'm a big fan of the pub & hotel set-up for a number of reasons. Firstly, you're never at a loss for food or a drink - just walk downstairs, but also these types of accommodation tend to be smaller than hotels, more quaint and in general, more unique. My most recent pub & hotel experience was at the Pen & Parchment in Stratford-Upon-Avon and I must say, it wasn't the top end of luxury perfection, but it was pretty darn great!

Many people visit Stratford-Upon-Avon for a simple day trip to take in some history and enjoy an old English village, however there are plenty of reasons to turn one day into two or three and in that case you need somewhere to stay. There's no shortage of adorable inns, hotels and B&B's in Stratford, no doubt due to all the theatre goers who require a place to stay after taking in a Shakespearean production. On my trip to Stratford-Upon-Avon I settled on the Pen & Parchment, a charming pub & hotel and it couldn't be more perfectly situated, no matter what you're plans.

Pen & Parchment outdoor seating

Located on Bancroft Place right on the canal, Pen & Parchment is just a 4 minute walk from the Royal Shakespeare Company, so it's the perfect place to rest your head after an evening of theatre. It's also just a short walk from many of the touristy areas of town and there are several restaurants in the nearby area as well, so it's conveniently located. Pen & Parchment, like so many others in Stratford, is a Greene King pub, a name you might recognise if you frequent the pub scene in Britain. You will find that if you wander around enough you'll find several Greene King pubs in Stratford-Upon-Avon and that they all serve the exact same menu, so with that in mind I'll say that Pen & Parchment is not necessarily for die-hard foodies, but it's a nice pub that's charmingly decorated and has a large outdoor seating area to enjoy.

Hotel Building

Operated by Old English Inns, the hotel part of the Pen & Parchment is a separate building (or at least my room and several others were), so noise isn't an issue at all if you're keen on an early bedtime. In fact, the pub is a fairly quiet one anyway, so sleep shouldn't be a problem.

Our room was upstairs in the additional building, which is easily accessed from the pub. There's parking available as well should you wish to bring a car. A long corridor leads you to your room and though it's really nicely decorated, there's a bit of a musty smell. That said, the smell completely disappears once you enter the room. A super cozy bed, an incredible bathroom and a large television were among the comforts that waited for us at the end of the hallway.

Decorated with traditional, yet slightly modern British countryside style, our bed was covered in a plaid bedspread with bright green colour pop throw pillows. Visible wooden beams were a reminder of the historical aspect of where we were staying yet the room was completely modern with outlets and charging stations next to the bed on each side, a rather large television and all the amenities we needed including coffee & tea and toiletries in the bathroom. The room was also equipped with an iron, a hair dryer (a really good one that actually worked) and plenty of hangers in the wardrobe.

My favourite part of our room was the bathroom which featured a rainforest shower and a giant tub. I took advantage of the super hot water and the spacious tub for a bath a couple of times while staying there and it was heavenly. It didn't hurt that there was a Lush nearby and I could snag some bath bombs to make my soak complete!

The Pen & Parchment is a lovely place to stay offering comfort, a delicious breakfast that's included every morning and the perfect location for checking out all that Stratford-Upon-Avon has to offer. I'd definitely go back after the relaxing 2 nights I had there if only to just chill out some more and enjoy the comfy bed, television and incredible baths!
