These days I'm not the biggest fan of cocktail dresses... They're beautiful, but they're expensive, impractical and I feel like you can wear them only a few times, so I've taken to creating my own festive party looks using separates and I find it's a lot more fun. Everything in this look except the skirt and socks was already in my wardrobe. This mix-n-match way of dressing for special occasions means I get a lot more wear out of the pieces I buy. Don't get me wrong... I do love a versatile black cocktail dress that I can style up in a bunch of different ways, but dressing for a party with separates means I don't have to buy 5 new frocks for the festive party season this year. Instead I can focus on buying pieces I can wear either dressed up or in a more casual way later and fun accessories like these cute little lace anklet socks by Jonathan Aston. (c/o Jonathan Aston London) It's my way of shopping smarter, not harder for the Christmas party season.
