Son of a Bun - Flippin' Good Burgers in Cork City, Ireland

burgers, fries and mac & cheese

It's very rare (pun intended) that I'm impressed by a burger joint... I generally find them disappointing at best since they seem to pop up all over the place and often value quantity over quality. That said, when I find a burger spot that I like, I really love it and I can't wait to brag about it. Son of a Bun in Cork is my new favourite and if you find yourself in Cork, you really must add it to your to-do list.

bar at Son of a Bun

Located on MacCurtain Street, pretty much right in the middle of the action in Cork City, this spacious eatery is bright, open and airy with high ceilings and exposed beams. Exposed brick, bright blue walls and wooden beams overhead offer an interesting environment while cheeky burger themed artworks line the walls. A fully stocked bar is on the side and an open kitchen sits on the far side of this modern diner. The tables are plentiful and comfortable, which is great given that Son of a Bun doesn't accept bookings. Regardless of your party size, simply rock up and try your luck.

Drinking a milkshake

The menu at Son of a Bun is pretty extensive and covers a wide range of preferences, but let's talk drinks for starters. A range of local Irish craft beers and ciders are on tap, but if that's not what you fancy they have a few other bottled beer options. There's a wine list and a cocktail menu too. As for the softer stuff, a number of sodas, juices, a full coffee & tea menu and bottled waters are available, but in my opinion it's practically a sin to visit such a place without indulging in a milkshake which is exactly what we did. Son of a Bun offers the traditional vanilla, chocolate and strawberry varieties alongside Oreo and brownie. For those with a proper sweet tooth, you can add a shot of salted caramel for a small charge. Floats are also on tap, something I haven't seen on a menu since my days of living stateside. I asked the server for her favourite and she suggested the brownie shake, so that's what I ordered and it definitely didn't disappoint. Creamy, thick and packed full of tiny bits of brownie - such a dreamy milkshake! When it comes to drinks, Son of a Bun has all the bases covered.

plain cheeseburger

Moving onto the food, burgers are the main event... Son of a Bun even has a monthly themed burger for those who love to try something that's new and only available for a limited time. You can choose to be as basic or adventurous as you like, going with something super traditional like a normal cheeseburger, or trying out something a bit more locally influenced like The Black which features Clonakilty Black Pudding. I opted for a classic cheeseburger with American cheese and it was perfect. Juicy, flavourful and smothered in melty cheese, just the way I like it. The bun was perfection and my only complaint would be that I didn't come hungry enough to finish it... I've been thinking about it ever since I left. It was truly delicious!

Son of a Bun S.O.B. Burger

My husband chose the S.O.B. burger which features crispy fried onions and bacon. He barely spoke to me throughout the meal because he was too busy eating it... For the burgers, it was thumbs up all around.

Bacon Cheese Fries

If burgers aren't your bag, there's plenty more to choose from including a few vegetarian options like the Veggie Burger or the Falafel Burger. In fact, all the burgers can be made vegetarian by swapping the meat for a falafel patty, so options are endless for those who don't eat meat. There's a chicken burger too as well as the Skinny which is perfect for anyone avoiding bread for dietary reasons and each burger can be customised to your liking by adding a number of toppings that are available including three types of cheese. There are a few salads to boot, so really there's something for everyone.

Bacon Mac & Cheese

While the burgers are pretty darn amazing, the real star of our meal was one of the side dishes. The Bacon Mac & Cheese is an absolute game changer and quite possibly the best I've ever had. The bacon is crispy, the mac is super cheesy and it's all expertly mixed up just right. They aren't at all stingy with the bacon either - it's full of it. If you're heading to Son of a Bun, this is a must order dish for your meal! We also had the bacon cheese fries and to be honest, they weren't terrible, but they weren't that great either. I could've done without them. The cheese wasn't melted and they were just kind of boring. As far as sides go, Son of a Bun offers up a great selection, which is refreshing. Not everyone wants fries, so it's great to have a few good options and if you're one to nibble before a meal, there are some light bites too. I suppose it's worth mentioning that they have a great menu for the kiddos too as well as a few desserts if you have enough room left after all that delicious food.

Son of a Bun Cork Interiors

The vision behind Son of a Bun is quite simple... Opened in 2015, this eatery aims to serve the best burgers possible. All of the meat is sourced locally from West Cork and is 100% pure aged Aberdeen Angus beef. The meat is minced daily on-site and simply seasoned before it hits the grill. The entire menu is homemade including all the sauces and desserts. Even the buns are freshly baked on the premises every morning.

Son of a Bun is a real winner in my opinion. The food was incredible, the milkshakes indulgent and the service was impeccable. It's the kind of place where you can not only enjoy your food, but you can have a great time too. You don't just have to take my word for it though... Son of a Bun won Best Burger in Cork at the first ever Burger Festival in 2017 and then went on to win the Best Burger in Ireland when the festival went national in 2018.
