5 Things to Do While in Quarantine Volume #1

Well folks, here we are in a situation most of us have never been in before... Things are shutting down daily and most of us are under lockdown in some form or another. It's easy to get discouraged as our plans are cancelled, timelines put on hold indefinitely and routines completely demolished. Some of you have kids at home you're trying to keep safe while educating them and working your full-time job at the same time. Others are far from home and living alone during this period of stark uncertainty and wondering what to do with all this time at home. Regardless of the specifics, I think it's safe to say that every last one of us is moving further and further away from our comfort zone, whatever that might look like.

I have worked from home since 2012 and that I'm very used to, but I'm not at all accustomed to being forced to stay home the whole time, having my husband here taking calls all day and being isolated from friends and workout pals. In fact I've spent the last two years taking steps to limit my isolation since I do work from home alone. Last week with all the news and new measures, I cried a lot. By Saturday I just couldn't get out of bed because I didn't know what to do with myself or how to plan for an uncertain future and I'm nothing if not a planner. Every day in this new reality is different and I'm trying to take them as they come, but the one thing I feel no matter what mood strikes is that I want to help and be useful. I also feel lucky every day that I wake up to find it's not my husband, myself or any of my loved ones who are sick. The losses suffered around the world are unimaginable and I know I'm lucky to just be asked to stay home.

In the interest of being helpful, I'm going to post some ideas of things you can do while in isolation that might either be helpful or perhaps distract you from the monotony. I'm going to be doing most of them too. If you do decide to do any of these ideas, let me know in the comments or post it in your Instagram stories and tag me (@pinkjulep). Let's take advantage of this quarantine time and make the best of it while also staying as sane as possible.

Here are the first 5 ideas...

1. Take an online fitness class.
Undoubtedly you've seen a lot of these being offered online or on Instagram. If you're like me, this might not be ideal, but ya know what? It's worth a try and if you don't like it, you don't have to finish it or ever do it again. It's good to try to stay as active as possible and keep up our healthy habits while we're staying at home, so if you have the time, it's worth a try.

2. Compile some new recipes to try.
If there was ever a time to go through all those cookbooks on your shelf or troll the internet looking for new recipes to try, it's now... Find them, flag them and plan dates to make some of them. If you want some inspiration, click here to check out all the recipes on Pink Julep.

3. Start meditating.
I don't meditate as such, but I often take a break, close my eyes and think. Meditating however might just be the thing we all need and there are lots of apps out there for guided meditation. If you've never tried it before, there's no time like the present... If you really don't like the idea of meditation, try just taking 10 minutes to yourself, away from screens, work and news. Maybe put on some soft music - do whatever works for you.

4. Get a head start on Christmas & birthday shopping.
Small businesses in particular need your help and support right now more than ever. Why not patronise online shops or purchase gift cards to redeem in the future for your friends and family? Your Christmas shopping now could help keep some businesses afloat and while you've got time, you can also get birthday gifts for everyone for the rest of the year.

5. Learn a new hairstyle.
I once learned how to fishtail braid from a YouTube video and I also learned how to French braid my own hair during a snow storm when I was a kid that kept us at home and out of school for weeks. If you've always wanted to learn how to do a certain hairstyle on either yourself or your kiddos, now's the time... Get the YouTube videos ready and start practicing.

Also, I'm starting a daily Instagram challenge after running a poll in my stories to help us all stay creative while we're staying home. Be sure to follow @pinkjulep on Instagram and get involved - it's just for fun and hopefully we can all connect a bit more while we navigate this quarantine time separately together.
