Scented Candles for a Cozy Lockdown

Scented Candles for a Cozy Lockdown

I always love scented candles, but they've become a rather special treat for me during this lockdown. Something about lighting a beautiful, fragranced candle makes staying home for an evening feel like more of a treat than a government mandate. I'm all for anything that makes this situation more pleasant, so it's no surprise that I've been treating myself to a few new candles lately.

My favourite candles at the moment come from a variety of sources and many of them are super affordable, some being only £5, but they really do brighten my spirits and make the flat feel more cozy and inviting. I know that times are really financially tough for a lot of people right now and this probably doesn't seem like a priority, but for those of you who could use a bit of a boost or want to gift something to someone who could use some cheering up, there's something for every budget below.

£10 or less...
Air Wick Botanica Candles
1. Fresh Pineapple & Tunisian Rosemary / 2. Moroccan Mint & Pink Grapefruit / 3. Caribbean Vetiver & Sandalwood
All £10 regular price, but currently £5 each on sale at Wilko.

I found these Air Wick Botanica candles on a display at Wilko and they smell great, they burn really nicely and the jars they come in are so chic, especially for the price tag. They're normally £10 and you'll find them also in grocery stores, but they're currently on sale at Wilko for £5. There are some other scents available, but these three are my faves! The range also includes room sprays, reed diffusers and scented oils. The great thing about a candle from an air freshener brand is that they're almost always really great at scenting a room well without costing the earth. The bonus is that these adorable lidded jars could be repurposed after use by removing the labels and the wax inside.

Zara Emotions Candles
1. Fleur D'Oranger / 2. Amalfi Sunray / 3. Vetiver Pamplemousse / 4. Fleur de Patchouli
All £15.99
Zara has teamed up with Jo Loves to create a fragrance collection this Spring called Zara Emotions. When I saw this, I immediately ordered a candle and was so impressed by it that I ordered 3 more. The scents are lovely, light and refreshing while the candles themselves are so minimalist and chic. A comparable Jo Loves candle will set you back £55, while these beauties are just £15.99, so it's a nice way to get a bit of luxury on a budget.

Under £50...
Diptyque Patchouli Candle with a vase of flowers and fashion books
Diptyque Patchouli - £47
In the past, I've never ever bought a Diptyque candle for myself, only ever giving them as gifts for very special people or getting the odd one as a gift from my husband over the years. About 2 weeks into lockdown I was really struggling with all the bad news, feeling stressed and I really needed a lift of some kind, so I finally bought one for myself in the scent I've always wanted and I don't regret it. It's a luxury for sure and expensive at £47, but the one thing I'll always say about Diptyque Candles is that they're totally worth it. They scent the room even when they're not lit and when they are burning, they're a treat for the senses. Normally I'd reserve such a candle for special occasions when people come over, but there's something nice about how lockdown life has taught me to allow myself to have little luxuries, just for me. That said, I've only lit it once when I was having a meltdown day. I guess that means meltdowns are the new dinner parties...

Under £60...
Molton Brown Candle
Molton Brown Black Peppercorn - £55
This Molton Brown candle was a Christmas gift and the most expensive on this list. It's been lovely to have it on lockdown evenings, burning and scenting the room while we watch television, but if I'm honest it's actually my least favourite of the lot. It's fabulous, don't get me wrong, but it's not the most effective of all the others at filling a large room with fragrance, so perhaps it's better to invest in more than one if it's in your budget or put it in a smaller room to get the full effect. I love the chocolate brown colour of this candle and it looks great while it burns with a warm amber glow shining through the dark, tinted glass. This one is a mood-setter for sure and perfect for movie nights at home when you turn out the lights, snuggle up with a blanket and just have the glow of candles & the telly.
